During the influenza epidemic of 1918 and 1919, special rooms were build specifically for fumigation where people especially soldiers from ships carrying 'flu infected passengers were "gassed" in order to protect them from the 'flu.

It was later discovered that the gas they were using could cause cancer but at the time, it was perceived to be a good idea to save the lives of those who may have been in contact with influenza.

During the Spanish Influenza epidemic in 1918-1919 many ships full of returning soldiers were moored near the shore of the Quarantine Station.
